Plumas Lake's New Grocery Store Runs on a Local Bread Schedule

At 10:30 on a Thursday morning, loaves from a cottage bakery in East Yuba City are due at the Holiday Market on River Oaks Boulevard. The same drop happens Tuesdays and Sundays. The bakery is Sutter Buttes Artisan Sourdough, and its own listing puts the Plumas Lake store first among the places that carry its bread.

The store has been open about two months, and most of what's been written about it covers the ribbon cutting. The bread schedule says more. Plumas Lake's first full-service grocery store is also the first spot in town where the small food producers of Yuba and Sutter counties reach shoppers on a set weekly rhythm. Until August, getting to that network meant leaving town.

Twenty years of driving out

The Territorial Dispatch covered the Aug. 28 grand opening and described a packed parking lot and long deli lines. It also reported that before the store opened, residents generally had to go to Marysville, Yuba City or other nearby communities to stock up. When ground was broken in August 2025, the same paper reported that many residents were driving 8 to 10 miles or more for full-service grocery shopping.

Yuba County Supervisor Gary Bradford represents the community and has lived in Plumas Lake since November 2005. He told the opening crowd, as the Territorial Dispatch reported, that a grocery store "was almost always at the top of the list" whenever residents told him what Plumas Lake needed. His shortest line made the point: "I'm just as excited as everyone else that I can finally buy my groceries and get a sandwich without leaving town!"

Those 8 to 10 miles bought more than milk and eggs. Marysville and Yuba City are where many of the area's small producers sell their goods, in coffee houses, a butcher shop and a natural foods market. A trip out for groceries also meant a trip to their shelves. The new store puts some of those same products about a block from home.

Where the same loaves land each week

According to the bakery's listing, Sutter Buttes Artisan Sourdough was founded in August 2023 and bakes direct orders on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for porch pickup in East Yuba City. It also stocks a short list of retail partners. Laid out by day, the list shows Plumas Lake slotting into a route that covers both downtowns:

Stop Address Bread days and time
Holiday Market Plumas Lake 2257 River Oaks Blvd. Tue, Thu, Sun at 10:30
New Earth Market 1475 Tharp Rd., Yuba City Tue, Thu, Sun at 10:00
The Brick Coffee House Café 316 D St., Marysville Tue at 9:30
Double Z's Custom Butcher 317 Third St., Marysville Thu at 9:00
Full Circle Coffee House 725 Plumas St., Yuba City Mon, Wed, Fri at 10:00
Sutter Buttes Brewery 421 Center St., Yuba City Thu at 11:00

Plumas Lake gets bread on three days a week. Only New Earth Market and Full Circle Coffee House match that. The Plumas Lake drop lands half an hour after New Earth's on the same three days. Small-batch sourdough tends to sell through, so the hour after the drop is the reliable window. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays the nearest shelf is back in Yuba City at Full Circle. The bakery can change its schedule, so check the bakery's page before planning a morning around it.

The other local names on the shelves

Bread is the clearest case, and there are others. The Territorial Dispatch listed the regional brands on the shelves at opening:

  • Big Daddy's Salsa Co., run by husband and wife Ryan and Laura Durham. The company's story says Ryan came up with the salsa idea in 2014.
  • Sutter Buttes Artisan Sourdough, the Yuba City cottage bakery behind the schedule above.
  • Simply Sweets of Plumas Lake, one of the few names on the list that comes from Plumas Lake itself.
  • Lou Orleans Gourmet Cupcakes and Desserts.

Big Daddy's retailer list shows how Plumas Lake fits into a wider route. The salsa was already sold at Holiday Markets in Auburn, Cool, Meadow Vista and Penn Valley, at BriarPatch in Auburn and Grass Valley, and closer to home at Big Al's Market in Wheatland. Until this year, the nearest place for a Plumas Lake household to buy it was down the road in Wheatland.

Why a chain store carries the cottage bakery

Small producers getting shelf space here makes sense once you know who owns the store. Holiday Market belongs to North State Grocery, Inc., which a 2025 Territorial Dispatch report says became 100 percent employee-owned in 2016. National Cooperative Bank describes the company as a 19-store chain based in Cottonwood that operates under the Holiday Market and Sav Mor names, with roots going back to 1962.

The Big Daddy's list shows the same salsa moving through several Holiday Market stores in the foothills, and the Plumas Lake store joined that existing network. Before construction, ABC10 reported county estimates that the store would employ about 80 to 90 workers, with most positions expected to go to local residents.

The basics, for the weekly run

The store's official listing gives the essentials:

  • Address: 2257 River Oaks Boulevard, Plumas Lake, CA 95961
  • Phone: (530) 763-6828
  • Hours: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., daily

The deli serves Boar's Head meats and cheeses, sandwiches and prepared foods, and there is fresh sushi along with produce, meat and bakery counters. Holiday Market's site also lists seafood, dairy, frozen foods, liquor, beer, wine, floral, general merchandise, and health and beauty. A pharmacy is not on that department list. Sandwich catering can be ordered through the chain's website.

Thanksgiving falls on Nov. 26, and it will be the store's first. The listing shows regular daily hours but no holiday schedule yet. For a turkey order or Thanksgiving Day hours, call the store at the number above. If your table depends on local bread, note that Nov. 26 is a Thursday, one of the bakery's regular Plumas Lake drop days. Holidays can shift a small baker's schedule, so confirm directly.

What's planned for the rest of the center

The store sits at Plumas Lake and River Oaks boulevards, behind Walgreens and Plumas Lake Stop 'n Shop. When the project was announced in 2025, the Appeal-Democrat laid out a larger plan. Each piece was a proposal, and none came with an opening date:

  1. A 22,000-square-foot junior anchor or big-box retailer
  2. Other retail and drive-through buildings
  3. A possible home-improvement anchor
  4. Snap Fitness, subject to county approvals
  5. A McDonald's, then in design review and subject to permits

Hilbers Inc. was named as the builder of the structures. Later, ABC10 reported that the developer had filed a permit application for a future commercial shell building meant for more retail and service businesses. It also reported that the center was designed for pedestrian and bicycle access. Yuba County's Development Review Committee agendas for June, July, August and October 2026 show no action on any of the named tenants. For now, the grocery store is the only part of the center that's open, and the rest is still on paper.

When the drive out is still worth it

Two months in, some of the local network still lives outside Plumas Lake. Got Cakes Bakery opened May 23 at 321 Third St. in downtown Marysville. The Territorial Dispatch reported that owner Cody Espinosa runs it with his sister, and the shop serves coffee and cold brew along with baked goods. It is a few doors from Double Z's Custom Butcher at 317 Third St., where the same sourdough arrives Thursdays at 9:00. To the south, Hop Riot at 407 Fourth St. in Wheatland has added espresso from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., served to customers 21 and older, according to the Territorial Dispatch.

Plumas Lake no longer needs those trips for the basics, or for a sourdough loaf on a Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday.

If you have a favorite local maker on the River Oaks shelves, or a question about what's coming to the rest of that center, I'd love to hear it. I keep track of changes like these across Yuba County because they shape everyday life for the families I work with, long before anyone mentions a move.
